About Us
What’s STANDF1RST?
STANDF1RST is an independent campus newsmagazine, an addition to the stable of publications that serves Bournemouth University. It aims to provide staff and students a regular hyperlocal news avenue – essentially, reportage from the Talbot and Lansdowne campuses. Our tagline says it all: News for the BU Community.
Do you have a print version?
No. STANDF1RST is online-only. In fact, as you can see on the header above, the full title is STANDF1RST Online. But feel free to refer to us as ‘S1O’ (S-ONE-OH).
So who works on STANDF1RST?
It is a student publication, produced by a bunch of very enthusiastic, young journalists. STANDF1RST is linked to the BA Communication and Media degree, though we have students from Multimedia Journalism and Computer Animation on board as well. In fact, we invite wider participation, not just from those on journalism or media courses. One aim of the publication is to harness the power of ‘civilian journalism’ to produce good coverage (drop us a line at inquiry.s10@gmail.com). The project is supervised by Chindu Sreedharan (csreedharan@bournemouth.ac.uk) and Dan Hogan (dhogan@bournemouth.ac.uk).
You said regular news avenue. How regular?
Ah, there you have us. At this point STANDF1RST is experimental (that’s our excuse for the production errors you might notice!). We hope to pilot three ‘editions’ this summer before we launch officially in the new academic year. Ideally we would like to be a weekly. But more on that later.
What form of journalism can we expect on STANDF1RST?
Magazine-ish stuff. We are a newsmagazine. So expect good features, interviews, columns. Expect experiential journalism. More considered reportage, less breaking news – that’s the plan for the pilot year anyway.
What is your politics?
Our politics is not to have any. We aim to present an independent voice.
